When you are in the very competitive business of selling insurance, one of the things that can help you is an insurance lead.  An insurance lead is a tip that can lead you to a prospective insurance buyer.  Those who sell insurance are well aware that leads are very important in the business; if you sell insurance and just advertise and wait for people to come to you, you will never gain a competitive edge in the market.

If you are an insurance agent, how do you get an insurance lead?  One thing that you can do is do your own footwork and look for leads in obvious places.  Insurance agents can check their local newspapers every day for wedding announcements or birth announcements.  Newly married couples or new parents are prime candidates for buying life insurance policies, and the insurance agent that contacts a couple first can be the one who gets their business.  Keeping an eye on the real estate market and new home developments can also generate leads for home insurance buyers. 

Many insurance agents employ the services of insurance lead experts and companies that specialize in generating leads for several types of businesses.  These lead businesses will sell agents what are called “live” leads, meaning people who have definitely expressed an interest in buying insurance and actually want someone to contact them.  They can also supply “warm” leads to agents, which are names and numbers of people who are most likely to need insurance at this time in their lives.
